Storm Systems and Impact on Travel

Meteorologists warn that a series of storm systems sweeping across the United States will affect the Northeast just before Thanksgiving Day. While significant snowfall is not expected directly in New York City, the region faces a higher-than-normal chance of rain and windy conditions. These factors could disrupt travel plans, particularly for those attending the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, where winds may gust up to 20 mph.

Temperature Expectations and Precipitation

Temperatures across the tri-state area are expected to drop to near or slightly below average levels during Thanksgiving, creating chilly conditions. Although snow is unlikely in the immediate metro area, surrounding regions might experience wintry precipitation as colder air moves in following the rain. The overall climate will be cooler and wetter than usual, which may make outdoor activities and travel less comfortable.

Travel Advisory and Preparation Tips

Nearly 90% of Americans travel by car during Thanksgiving, so drivers should be cautious on wet and windy roads in the tri-state region. Travelers are advised to monitor weather updates as rapid changes are possible with the approaching storm fronts. Early preparation for potential delays and packing suitable cold-weather gear will help mitigate the impact of these conditions.

Travellers should expect delays on Tuesday, November 25 and Wednesday, November 26, as the storm makes its way through the Midwest before moving into New York City plus the rest of the Northeast, according to AccuWeather meteorologist Bernie Rayno.

Forecasts currently predict that the storm will likely come out of Texas and into the Midwest from Tuesday into Wednesday, spreading over an area from northeast Texas through Arkansas, eastern Missouri and the southern half of Illinois.

β€œSo there’s going to be some travel delays across the central part of the United States,” Rayno said. “There could even be some strong to severe thunderstorms.”

The storm could also bring a period of snow and wintry mix may across the northern tier of the Plains and Midwest from Monday night to Tuesday. By Wednesday, the storm could create “significant problems” on roads in New York City.
